Acupuncture Therapy: What is it and how can it help you?

3071684 SAcupuncture therapy is a pain relief treatment that involves placing extremely thin needles into the patient’s skin to relieve pain. Practiced in China for thousands of years, the technique has gained popularity in the Western world over the past few decades.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture needles are placed at meridians in the body through which an individual’s life force or chi runs. Practitioners of Western medicine and science are not sure exactly how acupuncture works, but believe it may be related to the stimulation of blood flow and the release of natural painkillers in the body. The ancient Chinese believed there were 365 acupuncture points, but more have been discovered throughout the years.

While most frequently used to reduce nausea and pain in cancer patients and those recovering from anesthesia, acupuncture can also treat chronic migraines, back pain, fibromyalgia and more. It is commonly used in combination with other treatment methods and has very few side effects.

Treatments are performed weekly or biweekly and typically last about 30 minutes. Depending on the type of pain you are experiencing, the needles will be placed along your front or back. Single-use, stainless steel needles are inserted and remain in the skin for about 20 minutes. While you will feel the needles being placed, it will not hurt.
