Advice for Improving Your Posture

45719715 SThroughout each of our childhoods we were reminded of the importance of good posture time and time again. And while we may not hear, “Sit up straight,” from parents and teachers anymore, good posture is something that each of us should still strive for. Not only does holding your shoulders upright make you appear more confident, but it is also helps to reduce back and neck pain, improve mood, and increase productive. These reasons are just the beginning; with so many great benefits, why wouldn’t you want to work on your posture?

Strengthen Your Core

Your core muscles, a group of muscles in the abdomen and pelvic area, play a big role in good posture, making it important to keep them strong. Whether you do crunches, take a pilates class or try one of these workouts, there are plenty of exercises you can do to strengthen your core and support your spine.

Use a Pillow

Especially if you work a job where you are required to sit for extended periods of time, a lumbar support pillow is a great way to ensure you are sitting correctly. Placed between your back and the back of your chair, a lumbar support pillow can greatly reduce back pain, supporting your spine as it maintains your good posture. Just remember to keep both feet planted on the floor in front of you for the most benefit.

Get Up and Stretch

It is only natural for us to start to slouch if we sit in one place for too long, which is why it is so important to get up and stretch every so often. Take a quick lap around the office, head to the break room for a fresh cup of coffee or just do some stretching at your desk. Your spine will thank you and you will be able to return to your good posture when you sit back down.

While proper posture may feel strange at first, if you keep working on it, this way of sitting and standing will soon become second nature – and your back will thank you!
